While loading the boxes into the car, I ask Sadie and Chitto if we can stop by the bookstore. The tugging in my stomach has been getting firmer the longer I delay following my instinct. It’s only been half an hour, and soon it’ll tug so hard, my organs will end up splayed on the concrete.

They agree, as long as it’s a quick stop. Chitto loads the last box into the boot and takes the driver’s seat.

I direct Chitto to the bookstore, the tugging in my centre increasing in speed and intensity the closer we get. I impatiently jiggle my leg when Chitto stops at a red.

When we pull up out front of the store, an odour decay and stale blood assaults our noses. We launch from the car, leaving the doors open.

“Chitto, take that laneway,” barks Sadie.

I test the door. “It’s locked.”

Sadie runs back to the car and grabs a wrench from the door pocket and throws it at the glass door. It explodes, and when I shield my face with my arm, the violently shattered glass cuts into my hands and forehead. I ignore the stabbing pain, shaking my hair out as I step into the store. Then stop dead in my tracks.

The onslaught of blood and decay has Sadie dry heaving as she follows me into the store. I stretch the collar of my shirt over my nose to block the nauseating odour.

“Oh, fuck,” whispers Sadie. “We’ve gotta get out of here.”

I fall to my knees, an inexorable cry of anguish leaving my lips. Greg has met the same fate as the pack females. The jagged slash across his throat shining like a beacon, demanding I take notice.

Sirens sound in the distance.

Chitto pokes his head through the door. “Get in the car!”

Sadie grabs my arm, trying to drag me away from Greg’s lifeless body.

“No,” I cry. “We can’t leave him.”

“We have to, Lilly. How are we going to explain this to the cops? Is best we’re not associated. We don’t need the extra scrutiny. Gabe doesn’t need it. He has enough on his plate.” She yanks on my arm again. With a sigh, she says, “Chitto?”

Sadie runs from the bookstore. An engine rumbles to life outside.

Chitto picks me up from the floor, taking care not to touch my blood-stained jeans.

I slam my fists against his chest. “Put me down!”

“Can’t, sorry.” He races back to the car. Without releasing me, he jumps into the back seat. Sadie takes off before he closes the door.

A dial tone rings through the car. I ignore it in favour of shouting through my tears. “Go back. What’s wrong with you? Go back, Sadie!”

“What the hell happened? Why is she so distraught?”

I hiccup at the sound of my mate’s voice.

“Lilly was worried about her old boss, so we went to check on him.” She flicks her eyes to the mirror. “From the moment we pulled up, we could smell death in the air. The murderer followed us here, Gabe.”

“Fuck,” he snarls. “Get her back here.
